What are some of the pros/cons for utilizing an online backup service?
- Pros:
- Backup space is relatively low cost.
- Don’t have to monitor or support the backup disks.
- Cons:
- Loss of control on where your data is and who has access to it.
- If there is an issue with the online backup service, the chances that one will be pro-actively notified is slim.
- If there are network issues, the backups may not have run or finished successfully.
- If network connectivity is limited, then one may not be able to recover the required backup files until the network issues are resolved.
- Utilizing an online backup service will most likely lock on into a long term software contract which will be able to provide backup and recovery services.
- There is a high likelyhood that one will have to remain current with which ever software package is generating the backups.
- Migration issues if one would like to change backup service providers.
