DNS - Domain Name System - is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource participating in the Internet.

Domain Name - is the character representation of the mainly numerical addressing which is used to navigate the internet. This is also how your business is found by a visitor in the maze of computers called the internet.

Domain Types - gTLD (generic top-level domain) is identified by the suffix portion of the domain name. This is the right most portion of the domain name that follows the right most period of a domain name. There are many domain types, some of the more common types are listed below.

  • .biz - Business
  • .com - Commercial
  • .edu - education
  • .info - information
  • .mobi - mobile
  • .net - network
  • .org - organization
  • .tel - telephone
  • .tv - television
  • .us - United States
  • .us.com - United States Commercial
Home Page - This is the first page that someone sees when they enter your domain name into the address line of a web browser.

Hosting Site - This is where the web pages are electronically stored, where the domain name points to and where server side scripts/programs run which enhance the web site feature set.

Internet - is a global network of interconnected computers, enabling users to share information.

Link - Short for hyperlink, is a directly followable reference within a web page. Links are very useful for many reasons such as clarifying details and organizing documents.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator is the address for a web page. The address is translated into computer speak and routed through the maze of internet servers, routers and other pieces of equipment allowing access to your web site from most* locations on the internet. (* security may be added to limit who can access some of the pages of your web site.)

Web Browser - is a software application that allows one to view information via the internet. Some common web browsers are:

  • AOL Explorer
  • Arachne

  • Flock
  • Google Chrome
  • Internet Explorer
  • K-Meleon
  • Konqueror
  • Maxthon
  • Mozilla Firefox

Web page - An addressable/linkable file which is interpreted by a web browser for viewing by a visitor, also called a hypertext document.

WWW - World Wide Web - is a very large set of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet.
